The Visionaries Behind Women's Wellbeing and Consulting
Lee Marshall
A social worker, counsellor, wife, and proud mum of three boys and a couple of four-legged fur babies. I am passionate about nurturing women survivors of intimate partner violence and supporting social work and counselling practitioners to strengthen and grow their practice.
My story is simple yet humble. I grew up in a low socio-economic suburb in inner Sydney. My mother was a victim of domestic violence (although it wasn't considered domestic violence back then), and my father was controlling and manipulative, making life difficult for all of us. We were a struggling single-parent family, and life was tough.
During my childhood and adolescence holidays were spent with my maternal aunt and uncle, where I could escape to a happy family life out in nature on their property in the country. Embodied by a sense of freedom with their donkey’s, and dogs, with my aunt supporting regular trips to the local riding school to spend time trail riding. This is where my love of horses was born.
Two decades later, my professional career has evolved through my work in child protection, family counselling, research, and teaching. I have felt most connected to my work with women survivors of intimate partner violence and have focused on learning, reading, and researching this complex area of practice, developing deep compassion for the devastating impact on women and children and the difficult journey beyond survival to healing and recovery.
As a professional supervisor, I bring a variety of knowledge and experience to the supervision space. My urban, rural, and remote experience supports my passion for culturally sensitive practice that is client-centred and trauma-informed. My professional lived experience in child protection practice and forensic child sexual assault, working with women survivors of intimate partner violence, and family counselling offers a solid foundation for emerging practitioners.
My career challenges include supporting and mentoring frontline practitioners with vicarious trauma and burnout, witnessing firsthand the damaging effects on careers and personal lives. I have developed an awareness of the importance of self-care and resilience through the creation of a safe, nurturing space to unpack personal and professional learnings. I support and hold space for vulnerability, either one-on-one or in a group setting, complemented by somatic opportunities.
Women’s Wellbeing and Consulting is the creation of my personal and professional lived experiences, lifelong learnings, and passion for working with survivors of intimate partner violence. Combine this with a passion for supporting professional practitioners, both social workers and counsellors to survive and thrive in their practice. My desire is to create a uniquely personal experience grounded in both traditional counselling and Social Work techniques and professional frameworks, complemented by somatic modalities including horses, nature, and art to create a personalised approach to the needs of my clients.
Dean Marshall
Growing up on the Northern Beaches of Sydney from a young age my two passions were surfing and drumming. I entered the music industry as a drummer at a very young age, spending a lot of time travelling around the vibrant music scene of Sydney by night and surfing during the day. This lifestyle exposed me to significant drug use where I saw the impact this had on friends and their families. I realised recovery needed to be based on supporting the whole family unit, including partners and close friends who are often deeply affected by the struggles of their loved ones. This realisation became a driving force behind my decision to focus on holistic, family-inclusive support.
Since relocating to Queensland, I have worked across diverse environments in North Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast, supporting people with disability, mental health and youth at risk. My strengths-based, person-centred approach allows me to empower individuals and support them to acquire the tools to take control of their lives. Whether supporting individuals with disabilities or helping families navigate mental health challenges, the core of my work is to support clients, and their families develop solutions to improve their lives.
My practice is complemented by extensive experience working in remote Northern Territory communities with Aboriginal people where I developed a deep respect for remote communities and the need to provide culturally sensitive support, ensuring their unique needs are met. My aim is to provide compassionate, culturally sensitive, and person-centred support to help families navigate their life challenges, overcome obstacles, and create healthier, more resilient futures. I am proud of my reputation of consistency, reliability, and genuine care for my clients, which has allowed me to build trusting, long-term relationships.
